How to Build a Website for Your Art Business

As an artist, your work deserves to be seen—but without a website, you could be missing out on opportunities to showcase, sell, and promote your art to a wider audience. Whether you’re looking to build your own website or hire a professional to do it for you, knowing where to start can feel overwhelming.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the key steps to creating an artist website that reflects your style, engages your audience, and helps you grow your art business.

Overwhelmed and not sure where to start? Download my free guide on what to consider when getting an artist website built here.

Why Do Artists Need a Website?

Relying on social media alone isn’t enough. An artist website gives you:

  • A professional portfolio – Showcase your work in a space you fully control.
  • An online store – Sell original artwork, prints, and commissions without platform fees.
  • A marketing tool – Promote exhibitions, workshops, and collaborations.
  • A way to connect – Grow your audience and collect emails for future sales and opportunities.

Step 1: Choose the Right Website Platform

The first decision is whether to use a website builder (DIY) or hire a web designer.

DIY Website Builders for Artists
If you prefer to build your own site, here are some great platforms:

  • Squarespace – Easy to use, stylish templates, and built-in e-commerce.
  • Wix – Drag-and-drop editor with customisable artist-friendly templates.
  • Shopify – Best for artists focused on e-commerce and selling work online.
  • WordPress + WooCommerce – More flexible but requires some technical knowledge. This is the combination I used for this case study.

If you’d rather focus on your art and let a professional handle the tech side, hiring a web designer ensures a tailored, stress-free setup.

Step 2: Plan Your Website Structure

A well-structured site makes it easy for visitors to explore your work and make purchases. Your website should include:

  • Home Page – A visually engaging introduction to your work.
  • About Page – Your artist bio, journey, and creative philosophy.
  • Shop (if selling art) – Listings with pricing, descriptions, and shipping details.
  • Portfolio/Gallery – High-quality images of your best work.
  • Exhibitions/Workshops – Details of upcoming events or courses.
  • Contact Page – A simple way for clients, galleries, or buyers to reach you.

Step 3: Showcase Your Work Professionally

Your website should be visual-first and showcase your art in the best possible way. Follow these steps to ensure this is the case:

  • Use High-Quality Images – Invest in professional photography or scan artwork at high resolution.
  • Organise by Category – Sort your portfolio by collections, themes, or mediums.
  •  Add Image Descriptions – Include artwork titles, dimensions, materials, and pricing (if selling).

Good visuals make a difference—your website should feel like an online gallery.

Step 4: Set Up E-Commerce (If Selling Your Art)

If you want to sell artwork, prints, or commissions, your website needs a seamless buying process.

  • Choose a Payment System – Stripe, PayPal, or Shopify for secure transactions.
  • Define Shipping Policies – Be clear about delivery times, packaging, and costs.
  • Automate Inventory – Track stock levels and remove sold items automatically.

If you’re unsure about e-commerce setup, working with a web designer can help you create a professional, hassle-free shop.

Step 5: Optimise for Search & Promotion

Your website won’t attract visitors automatically—you need to help people find it!

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) – Use relevant keywords like “abstract paintings for sale” or “handmade ceramic art”.
  • Start a Blog – Share behind-the-scenes insights, creative processes, or exhibition updates.
  • Collect Emails – Offer a free download or exclusive discounts to grow your mailing list.

Having a strong SEO strategy ensures your website reaches buyers, collectors, and galleries.

Step 6: Maintain & Update Your Site Regularly

A successful artist website isn’t a one-time project—it needs regular updates.

  • Keep your portfolio fresh – Add new work and remove outdated pieces.
  • Update your shop – Adjust pricing, availability, and special offers.
  • Post new content – Share blog posts, exhibition news, or creative insights.

If keeping your site up to date feels overwhelming, consider hiring a professional for website maintenance and updates.

Final Thoughts: Should You Build Your Own Website or Hire a Professional?

Building your own website is a great option if you enjoy DIY projects and have the time to learn. However, if you want a fully customised site, seamless e-commerce, and expert SEO, hiring a professional can save time and ensure your website is set up for success.

10 Ways to Protect Your Business and Secure Its Future

Running a business is a rewarding journey, but it also comes with risks. Whether you’re a yoga teacher expanding online or a wellness entrepreneur managing workshops and memberships, protecting your business is essential for long-term success.

10 ways to secure your business

In this guide, I’ll share practical ways to safeguard your business—so you can focus on growth and impact without unnecessary worry.

1. Protect Your Data

Cybersecurity might not sound exciting, but it’s crucial for any business operating online. Protecting sensitive client and business data safeguards your reputation and reduces risks.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication for all accounts.
  • Back up important data regularly with secure, cloud-based tools.
  • Train yourself and your team on best practices for handling sensitive information.
  • These small steps can make a big difference in protecting your business.

    2. Use Contracts and Agreements for Everything

Clear, well-drafted contracts are essential for protecting your business relationships. They set expectations, outline deliverables, and reduce misunderstandings.

Every agreement—whether it’s with a client, supplier, or collaborator—should include:

    • Payment terms and conditions.
    • Project timelines and responsibilities.
    • A process for resolving disputes.
    • Templates can be a good starting point, but always consult a professional to ensure they’re legally sound.

I use Abode for this as I have a photoshop account anyway but you could use BreezeDoc, DocuSign etc for this.

    3. Protect Your Intellectual Property (IP)

Your business name, logo, and content are valuable assets—make sure they’re protected.

    Here’s how:

    • Trademark your brand name and logo: This prevents others from using them without permission.
    • Copyright your content: Whether it’s blog posts, digital courses, or artwork, ensure your intellectual property is legally protected.
    • Watermark your digital products: This deters unauthorised use of your materials.
    • Investing in IP protection now can save you significant time and money down the road.

    4. Build a Financial Safety Net

Unexpected expenses can pop up at any time. Having a financial cushion ensures your business can weather these storms.

    • Aim to save at least 3–6 months of operating expenses in an emergency fund.
    • Set aside money for taxes and irregular expenses in a dedicated business savings account.
    • Regularly review your cash flow and plan for slower periods.
    • A solid financial foundation reduces stress and keeps you focused on what matters.

    5. Create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

SOPs are written guides for performing routine tasks in your business. They’re a game-changer for consistency and efficiency.

    With SOPs in place, you’ll:

    • Spend less time answering team questions.
    • Reduce errors and improve client experiences.
    • Make onboarding new team members much easier.
    • Start with your most repetitive tasks, like client onboarding or social media posting, and build from there.

I have a whole blog post about SOPs here

    6.Always Have the Right Insurance

No matter the size of your business, insurance is a must-have. It provides a safety net for unexpected challenges, such as accidents or disputes.

Consider these key types of insurance:

    • Public Liability Insurance: Covers you if someone gets injured or their property is damaged during your business activities.
    • Professional Indemnity Insurance: Protects you if a client claims your advice or services caused financial loss.
    • Business Interruption Insurance: Helps cover lost income if an unforeseen event disrupts your operations.
    • Review your policies annually to ensure they still meet your needs.

I use Markel Direct for my all my business Insurance needs. Take a look at their services here. (this is an affiliate link)

    7. Register Your Business

Registering your business not only makes it official but also protects your name and ensures you’re operating legally.

    • Choose a unique business name and check its availability.
    • Keep your registration and any required licences or certifications up to date.
    • This step helps establish credibility and prevents others from using your business name.

    8. Separate Personal and Business Finances

Mixing personal and business finances is a common mistake that can lead to confusion and legal risks. I must admit I did this to start with but soon realised it made things much more confusing than they should be.

    • Open a dedicated business bank account to manage income and expenses.
    • This keeps your records clean and simplifies bookkeeping, especially at tax time.
    • Separating finances is also essential for protecting personal assets if any legal issues arise.

    9. Build Strong Relationships with Professionals

You don’t have to do everything alone. Surround yourself with a trusted network of experts who can help you protect and grow your business.

    Consider working with:

    • An accountant: To manage cash flow, budgeting, and tax compliance.
    • A lawyer: For contracts, intellectual property, and legal advice.
    • An insurance broker: To ensure you have the right coverage.
    • A business coach or mentor.

Having the right people on your side saves you time, stress, and potential headaches.

    10. Stay Informed and Adaptable

The business world is always changing, and staying informed helps you stay ahead.

    • Attend workshops or webinars to learn about industry trends, regulations, and best practices.
    • Regularly assess your business for vulnerabilities and take proactive steps to address them.
    • Protecting your business is an ongoing process, and staying adaptable ensures you’re always prepared for what’s next.

Protecting your business doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By taking these steps—securing insurance, using contracts, protecting your IP, and more—you’re creating a solid foundation for long-term success.

Book a call today and we can go over this list together and ensure you’re prepared and protected.

Why Your Business Needs Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to Scale Successfully

Are you spending too much time repeating the same tasks or fixing avoidable mistakes? Does it feel like your business would fall apart without you managing every little detail? If so, it’s time to embrace the power of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Piles of paper records to depict how useful SOPs are

SOPs are clear, step-by-step instructions that document how tasks should be completed in your business. They ensure consistency, simplify delegation, and free you to focus on the bigger picture. In this post, I’ll show you why SOPs are essential for scaling your business and how they can save you time, reduce stress, and drive sustainable growth.

What Are SOPs and Why Do They Matter?

SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) are written guides that outline how to perform specific tasks or workflows in your business. Think of them as your business’s playbook—designed to keep everything running smoothly, even if you’re not there to oversee every detail.

    By standardising processes, SOPs:

    • Eliminate guesswork, ensuring tasks are completed consistently.
    • Prevent errors and inefficiencies.
    • Provide a clear reference for anyone performing a task, whether it’s you, a team member, or a new hire.
    • Imagine having a step-by-step guide for onboarding clients, scheduling social media posts, or managing appointments. With SOPs, these tasks no longer need to rely on your memory or availability—they’re streamlined, documented, and ready to hand off.

The Benefits of SOPs for Wellness Entrepreneurs

For wellness entrepreneurs, SOPs can be transformative. Here’s how they help:

    1. Save Time
Repetition can be a massive time drain. SOPs let you perform tasks more efficiently by removing guesswork and making processes repeatable.

    2. Delegate with Confidence
Feeling overwhelmed because you can’t trust others to handle tasks the way you would? SOPs empower your team to take over tasks without constant supervision, freeing you to focus on growth.

    3. Improve the Client Experience
Consistency is key to building trust with your clients. Whether it’s onboarding new members or delivering services, SOPs ensure every client receives the same high-quality experience.

    4. Lay the Foundation for Growth
Scaling your business requires structure. SOPs standardise operations, making it easier to handle increased demand without sacrificing quality or burning out.

    Examples of SOPs You Need

Not sure where to start? Here are a few examples of SOPs that can make a big difference in your wellness business:

    • Client Onboarding Process: A step-by-step guide for welcoming new clients, from initial contact to setting expectations.
    • Social Media Posting: Instructions for creating, scheduling, and tracking posts to maintain a consistent online presence.
    • Content Creation Workflow: Templates and checklists for producing blogs, email campaigns, or other content efficiently.
    • Booking and Scheduling: Procedures for managing client appointments or workshop registrations.
    • Daily Admin Tasks: Guidelines for handling emails, invoices, and other recurring tasks.

These SOPs don’t need to be complex—they just need to provide clarity and ensure consistency.

How to Create an Effective SOP

Creating SOPs might sound daunting, but with a simple process, it becomes manageable:

    Step 1: Identify Repetitive Tasks
Start with tasks you perform frequently or that take up a lot of your time.

Step 2: Break Down the Steps
Write out each step as if you were explaining it to someone new. Be clear and concise, avoiding unnecessary jargon.

Step 3: Choose the Right Format
Decide how to present your SOPs. This could be a checklist, a flowchart, or a written guide. Tools like Google Docs, Trello, or Notion work well for this.

    Step 4: Test and Refine
Ask a team member or colleague to follow the SOP and provide feedback. Make adjustments to ensure it’s user-friendly and effective.

    When to Update Your SOPs
Your business isn’t static, and your SOPs shouldn’t be either. Here’s when to revisit and update them:

    • When Processes Change: New tools, workflows, or strategies require updates.
    • After Feedback: If a team member finds a step unclear or redundant, make adjustments.
    • Periodically: Schedule regular reviews (e.g., quarterly) to ensure your SOPs remain relevant and effective.
    • Conclusion: Scale with Confidence Using SOPs

Standard Operating Procedures are more than just documents—they’re a foundation for growth, efficiency, and consistency in your business. By saving you time, improving delegation, and enhancing the client experience, SOPs make scaling sustainable and stress-free.

If you’re ready to create SOPs for your wellness business but don’t know where to start, I’d love to help. Together, we can streamline your operations, set up systems, and build a business that supports your goals.

Work-Life Balance for Wellness Entrepreneurs: Strategies for Success Without Burnout

As a wellness entrepreneur, you’re passionate about helping others achieve balance and fulfilment in their lives. But let’s be honest—how often do you feel out of balance yourself? The demands of running a business can quickly overwhelm even the most grounded among us, leading to burnout and frustration.

A woman walking along beach on a sunny winters day

The good news is that work-life balance isn’t just a dream; it’s a practice you can build into your daily routine. By taking small, intentional steps, you can create a business that supports your well-being while growing your impact. Here’s my six top tips:

    1. Start with Clarity: Define What Balance Means to You

Work-life balance isn’t one-size-fits-all. For some, it’s about setting boundaries between work and personal life. For others, it’s finding harmony between the two.

Action Step: Take 10 minutes to reflect on what balance looks like for you. Write down the activities, relationships, and practices that energise you, and compare them to the tasks that drain you.

    2. Set Clear Boundaries (and Stick to Them)

When you’re passionate about your work, it’s easy to let it spill over into every part of your life. But without boundaries, burnout is inevitable.

Action Step: Establish “office hours” and communicate them to your clients and team. Use tools like scheduling apps to block off personal time, and make it non-negotiable.

    3. Simplify Your Operations

One of the biggest contributors to overwhelm is juggling too many moving parts. Streamlining your business operations can free up time and mental space.

Action Step: Audit your daily tasks and look for opportunities to automate or delegate. For example:

    • Use scheduling tools for appointments.
    • Delegate admin tasks to a virtual assistant or Online Business Manager.

    4. Prioritise Self-Care

As someone who guides others toward wellness, it’s vital to model those same practices in your own life. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s necessary for your business to thrive.

Action Step: Incorporate small wellness rituals into your day. A 10-minute meditation, a short yoga session, or even a walk outdoors can make a world of difference.

    5. Focus on What Matters Most

Not all tasks are created equal. Spending your energy on high-impact activities—like nurturing client relationships or creating meaningful content—can help you achieve more without doing more.

Action Step: Identify your top three priorities for the week. Use tools like Eisenhower’s Matrix to sort tasks into what’s urgent, important, or neither.

    6. Build a Support System

You don’t have to do it all alone. Surrounding yourself with the right support—whether it’s a coach, a mentor, or an operations manager—can make running your business far more manageable.

Action Step: Reach out for help when you need it. Whether it’s hiring an OBM to manage the day-to-day or joining a mastermind group, having the right people in your corner is invaluable.

Conclusion: Balance Is a Journey, Not a Destination

It may be a cliche, but it is true – achieving work-life balance as a wellness entrepreneur isn’t about perfection; it’s about intention. By simplifying your operations, setting boundaries, and prioritising self-care, you can create a business that supports not only your clients but also your own well-being.

Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. If you’re ready to simplify your business and reclaim your time, let’s chat. Together, we can build the systems and strategies you need to thrive.

Step 1: Conduct a Business Audit

Before you can move forward, it’s important to reflect on what’s working and what’s not. A thorough business audit will help you identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and areas ripe for improvement.

    What to Review:

    • Time: Which tasks are eating up your time? Are they aligned with your core business goals?
    • Tools: Are your current tools and software helping or hindering your workflow?
    • Processes: Are there repetitive tasks that could be automated or streamlinedActionable Tip: Create a list of your daily and weekly tasks. Highlight those that can be delegated, automated, or eliminated entirely.

Step 2: Embrace Delegation and Automation

One of the most powerful ways to streamline your business is by freeing yourself from tasks that don’t require your direct involvement.

    • Map out each workflow step-by-step to identify redundancies.
    • Use templates for repetitive tasks like onboarding new clients or creating proposals.
    • Centralise communication with your team or clients using tools like Slack or Monday.com.

Actionable Tip: Focus on simplifying one workflow per month throughout 2025 for continuous improvement.

Step 4: Set Up Goals and Metrics for 2025

Goals are the compass for your business, but tracking meaningful metrics ensures you stay on course. For heartfelt businesses, growth isn’t just about revenue—it’s also about impact and alignment with your values.

    • Increase client retention rates by X%.
    • Launch a new product or service aligned with your mission.
    • Improve operational efficiency to reduce working hours by X%.

    Metrics to Track:

    • Client satisfaction scores.
    • Repeat customer rates.
    • Productivity (e.g., tasks completed or hours saved).

Actionable Tip: Choose 2–3 key metrics to track and review monthly.

Step 5: Celebrate Progress, Not Just Outcomes

Scaling and optimising your business can feel overwhelming if you focus only on big wins. Celebrate small milestones along the way to stay motivated and enjoy the journey.

    Ideas for Celebrating Success:

    • Share a client success story or testimonial.
    • Reward your team for reaching project milestones.
    • Take a day off to reflect on how far you’ve come.

Actionable Tip:  Schedule quarterly check-ins to review progress and celebrate achievements.
